Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is here to stay. It's most effectively applied as a way to support human creativity. My writing uses AI in the same way that I would utilize a human critique partner. I do not use AI in any way that replaces or generates text for me. My writing is 100% my own.

If you would like more detailed examples of ways I do or do not use AI, continue reading below.

  • I apply AI to help me research, mostly because it can get me to obscure information much faster than getting caught in the Internet-search rabbit hole. When I need fully accurate information, I ask for its sources and confirm the data it provides.

  • I sometimes use AI to help me brainstorm ideas. Often this includes refining ideas to fit a specific time period, or make a magical/futuristic technology feasible within the rules of the world I am creating. Typically, I request multiple suggestions so that I can select the most effective one or two. And about as often, its suggestions lead my mind down an entirely different path it never suggested.

  • I may occasionally use AI to help with phrasing or wording of a specific idea. At most, this would be a couple of sentences. Again, I do not view this as any different from soliciting suggestions from a critique partner.

  • AI never drafts my stories. It is all from my own head, skill, and hard work. All flaws are my own. All successes are my own. And yes, I loved me a good em-dash long before AI decided they were cool.

  • On occasion, I will upload a completed draft of a text into a writing-focused AI tool in order to provide me overall revision suggestions. These are general trends it identifies by reading as a sample audience, and may include direction on repetitive words, pacing, emotional arc, story beats, etc. To repeat what was stated above, this is the same information I would receive from a human editor in order to improve my story until the final draft.

  • As I am a writer and not a marketer, I utilize AI at times to help me market, prepare social media posts, or otherwise get my story into your hands. However, the vast majority of the final products are still my own. AI, more often, gives me direction.

  • I personally review every suggestion or option AI provides. I do not accept everything that it generates, but instead I actively choose what is best for the story I'm creating.

  • I will never knowingly use AI-generated art in any way that will earn me income. This includes book covers, merchandise, character art, etc. I support all artists in their creative endeavors and will work with those who share my similar vision for the utilization of generative AI.
